The Alberta business environment is one of the most enviable in the nation. Along with an abundance of natural resources (agricultural land, energy, minerals and forests), the province also boasts world class infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce, and a very competitive tax environment. Other characteristics that make Alberta a favorite location for entrepreneurs include – a fiscally responsible government that is committed to streamlining regulation to enhance business competitiveness, strong public education and health care systems, plus a population with the highest disposable income in Canada. With respect to important drivers of the Alberta economy, oil sands, oil and gas services, machinery and metals fabrication, retail, wholesale trade, financial services, information, professional, scientific and technical services have been some of the largest growth sectors over the past decade.

Alberta is the largest producer of conventional crude oil, synthetic crude, natural gas and gas products in the country. The province’s Athabasca Oil Sands have estimated unconventional oil reserves approximately equal to the conventional oil reserves of the rest of the world (estimated to be 1.6 to 2 trillion barrels). With modern unconventional oil production technology, at least 10% of these deposits, or about 170 billion barrels are considered to be economically recoverable, making Canada’s total proven reserves the third largest in the world, after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela (CIA.gov).
