The Iran business environment isn’t exactly a beacon of free enterprise. With a large public sector and roughly half of the economy centrally planned, private sector activity is typically limited to small-scale workshops, farming and services. Price controls, subsidies, widespread corruption and other restrictive factors weigh down the economy, undermining the potential for private-sector-led growth. Such economic inefficiencies are further exasperated when Iran’s skilled labor pool becomes increasingly frustrated and seek employment abroad – creating a significant “brain drain”.
