Guadeloupe business opportunities are predominately linked, directly or indirectly, to the tourism sector. An overseas department of France, Guadeloupe is part of the European Union, and as such, its currency is the euro. A high percentage of the tourists who visit Guadeloupe also originate from the EU, most from France. Less than 10% of visitors originate from the US, Canada and other parts of the world. Apart from tourism and the service sector, the island also depends on agriculture (sugar cane, bananas, eggplant, cocoa, flowers, etc.), plus light industry (sugar and rum production, textiles, electronics assembly, etc.). Most food, manufactured goods and fuel are imported.
