The Dominican Republic business environment is ripe with both opportunities and risks. On the positive side, the Caribbean’s largest economy is fairly diversified. Major sectors by size include a service sector (fueled by tourism, telecommunications and Free Trade Zones), agriculture (2nd largest employer and 2nd in terms of export earnings), a large mining sector (leading export earner and 3rd leading employer), plus a construction sector that largely follows the ebbs and flows of tourism. A few of the negatives that may pose risks to Dominican business ventures include energy shortages (causing frequent blackouts and high prices), widening income inequality, high unemployment and incidence of fraud and corruption.
